TRAGIC: Teen Girl Beaten To Death In High School Bathroom
A “quiet and nice” 16-year-old girl “who kept to herself” is dead after an assault at Delaware high school.
A teen girl died after she was assaulted at her Delaware high school, authorities said.
The 10th grader, who has been identified as Amy Inita Joyner-Francis, was taken out from a bathroom on a stretcher and flown to a children’s hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The fatal fight occurred after 8 a.m. Thursday inside a bathroom at Howard High School of Technology in Wilmington.
Details of what exactly happened in the restroom and the cause of her death have not been released by Police.
WPVI-TV reports a witness, who was in a stall when the brawl erupted, said the 16-year-old was fighting another girl when others joined and “started jumping her,” causing her to “hit her head on the sink.”
Detectives have interviewed several students considered persons of interest and two girls, whose identities have not been disclosed, were taken to police headquarters for further questioning, Wilmington police Chief Bobby Cummings said.
Speaking about the student’s death at a press conference, Mayor Dennis Williams said his “heart is broken,” and that it is very unsettling that the “young lady lost her life today.”
“Things like this shouldn’t happen. My heart bleeds for the family, the kids that go to this school, administrators and our city,” he added
Hundreds of grieving students, friends, neighbors, and community activists gathered outside the school for a vigil on Thursday night. The hashtag #RIPAmy was also trending on Twitter as friends and classmates, tweeted about their shock over the sudden death of their classmate.
Joyner-Francis was a brilliant student, who, according to her neighbors, was a quiet and nice girl who kept to herself.
As we extend our condolences to the grieving family, friends and community, we hope that officials can get to the bottom of what caused her death.
#RIPAmy.
