Black Scholarship: P. Diddy Establishes $1M Scholarship Fund At Alma Mater

The widely known Black rapper, Sean “Diddy” Combs has awarded Howard University a $1million scholarship fund.

American rapper and entrepreneur, Sean “Diddy” Combs has extended his benevolent act to his Alma Mater, Howard University. He established a million dollar scholarship fund in the Black university for all students wanting to undertake a course in business.

Combs made the check presentation to the president of the school, Dr. Wayne Frederick at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.

The Black hip-hop artist in his statement said, “I was blessed to receive a great education from Howard University – one of the best schools in the world.” He continued to say that “This scholarship will make it possible for the next generation of leaders to pursue their dreams and achieve greatness.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs enrolled as a student at Howard University in 1990 but left after two years to establish his dream as a musician. Nonetheless, he was successful in his music career and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in humanities by the school in 2014.

Combs stated that “One of the biggest blessings is getting the chance to one day be able to give back, and to support the people that supported you.”

The Black-American rapper further explains his motivation for the gesture. He said that “Because the only reason why I was able to chase my dreams was the empowerment that Howard gave me, the support that they gave me, the first two years.”

The scholarship package does not only take care of the student’s financial needs but it also provides the student an opportunity to be mentored by professionals from Combs’ companies. Also, awardees of the scholarship get to practice the things they are being taught in school by getting the opportunity to do an internship program with Bad Boy Entertainment or Revolt Media &TV.

Black children are the group of students that is most exposed to inequality in education. They have fewer opportunities to get scholarships and enter colleges. Combs kind gesture is very timely; in a period where most Black children are unable to attain quality education due to financial needs. Kudos to the Black-American rapper for stepping in to help Black children gain a good education.   The Black community should unite and contribute to the prosperity of our children so that they could have equal economic and social opportunities.
