Police Chief Demoted But Not Fired For Racial Profiling
It is such a pity to note how frequently blacks are racially profiled. It is one of such incidents that got a police chief to be lowered in rank
Whereas racial profiling has become the order of the day for police officers, conducting a racial profile of any person is highly discriminatory. Yet, it is the crime law enforcement officials commit frequently.
And any act of discrimination is against the constitution. Benjamin Fox violated this by sending out emails ordering officers under his command to start conducting racial profiles of Black people in Wyckoff.
This whole issue of punishment of demotion of the police chief stemmed from racially-tagged emails he sent to his subordinates in 2014, internal emails revealed racist policing. The Wyckoff, New Jersey police chief was demoted Wednesday for instructing officers to racially profile Black people from a neighboring town.
Below is the email that got the police chief demoted:
“Profiling, racial or otherwise, has its place in law enforcement when used correctly and applied fairly. Black gang members from Teaneck commit burglaries in Wyckoff. That’s why we check out suspicious Black people in white neighborhoods. It’s insane to think that the police should just ‘dumb down’ just to be politically correct. The public wants us to keep them safe and I’m confident that they want us to use our skills and knowledge to attain that goal.”
Is demotion the right punishment for racial profiling? I don’t think so. This just shows that the system permits people like this cop in it. Making a stand against racism by completely laying him off all cop duties seems like the right thing to do, so as to prevent further cases of racial profiling in law enforcement.
