NYPD Commissioner Calls Rappers ‘Thugs,’ Blames Them For Violence At Concert

Meanwhile, Jasiri X, a rapper and an activist, thinks otherwise. He said, “the biggest thug in NY City is the NYPD”.

The T.I. concert Thursday, was thrown into chaos just minutes before the rapper was set to come on stage. The shooting incident killed one person and wounded three. NYPD commissioner Bill Braton said that they had pretty good idea of what happened,” shortly before calling rappers “thugs” and “so-called” artists.

“The crazy world of these so-called rap artists who are basically thugs that basically celebrate violence they did all their lives, and unfortunately that violence often times manifests itself during their performances, and that’s exactly what happened last evening,” Bratton said.

After he was asked if he left his old notion of the 90’s concerning rappers, here is what he had to say:

“No, this world has not deformed,” Bratton said. “It’s unfortunate.”

The background of a lot of these young people, they are significant artists in that world, if you will, rap, but unfortunately the lifestyles that they lived often times follow them into the entertainment world and the success they have in it,” Bratton continued. “You’d like to think that with all the wealth that comes from the fame, that they’ll be able to turn their lives around but they continue hanging out with the same people they hung out with when they came out of that world of desperation, poverty, and crime.”

For using such a word, “thug”, he outright used a racist word for these rappers which by definition refers to a person who is violent or criminal, but has been used to refer to black people. It creates the notion that all black men are violent criminals.

“If any body wants to see thugs that celebrate violence, you just simply have to look at the NYPD. It was members of the NYPD that were holding up signs after Eric Garner was killed that “I can believe”. Look at the history of police brutality in NYC. So he want thugs that celebrate violence, he should look at the officers that he represents. They carry themselves like gangs and thugs that do violence. Just recently, there was a brother who was a post officer who was arrested and thrown around and disrespected. The biggest thugs in NY City is the NYPD,” Jasiri X, black activist and rapper, told Black Matters in response to the commissioner’s statement.
