Black ‘Party-goer’ shot Dead By White Vigilante
“The man’s body was right in front of the mailbox. I don’t know how he was a threat from the garage … Just kinda — I don’t know, it sounds borderline hate crime,” Jalen Lewis, the host of the party.
The Black community woke up to the horrible news of another death of an innocent Black teen whose only offense was to have gone out to a party. The incident, which happened on the 7th of August points all guilt to a 39-year-old Raleigh white man.
This man, who is now behind bars, claims he only fired a “warning shot” at the Black party-goer, but somehow ended up killing him. The issue of white supremacism seems to has taken a new turn in the arena of racism.
The culprit known as Chad Copley called 911 at 1 a.m. on Sunday after allegedly fearing for his family and himself. In the 911 call, he admitted to firing a shot from his garage, though he was unsure if it hit anyone.
Copley: We have a lot of people outside of our house yelling and shouting profanities. I yelled at them, “Please leave the premises.” They were showing a firearm, so I fired a warning shot and we got somebody that got hit.
911: Somebody was shot?
Copley: I don’t know if they’re shot or not, ma’am. I fired my warning shot like I’m supposed to by law.
In what seems to be a deliberate action to kill the Black teen, the culprit in the 911 phone call stated that he would defend his neighborhood against ‘hoodlums’.
Copley: It’s Singleleaf Lane. We’ve had a bunch of hoodlums out here racing. I am locked and loaded.
Copley: I’m gonna secure my neighborhood. I’m on Neighborhood Watch, I’m gonna have the neighbors with me. There are hoodlums out here racing up and down the street. It’s one o’clock in the morning. They have firearms and we’re gonna secure our neighborhood. If I were you, I’d send PD as quickly as possible.
The victim, who was immediately identified as a 20-year-old Kouren-Rodney Bernard Thomas, was pronounced dead after arriving at a local hospital.
Copley is noted for his involvements with drugs and bad records with the police. If indeed the culprit was afraid for his life, he would have locked himself in his apartment rather than firing live bullets. It is quite obvious that he was only after the life of the innocent Black teen in a desperate attempt to become a local hero.
We ask the community to arise as we combat this “menace” called white supremacy.
