Reporter Fired After Dumb Joke About Michael Brown’s Death

Bobby Hughes, a St. Louis reporter made an insensitive racist remark about the killing of Michael Brown prior to Brown's mother appearance on Democratic National Convention.

A KTVI reporter in St. Louis, Bobby Hughes has paid for his careless distasteful post he wrote on his Facebook page. The reporter upon hearing that the mother of the late Michael Brown will be making an appearance at the Democratic National Convention took to his Facebook page and wrote, “she is going to talk about the new lead diet she’s endorsed. Five servings and you can lose 200 lbs in two years easily”.

Hughes sarcastic statement immediately received a lot of condemnation. Many describe his action as irresponsible and careless. The Ethical Society of Police, comprising of Black police officers in the vicinity abruptly called for the reporter to be released from his duty. According to the St. Louis American, the Fox affiliate’s Black employee planned an urgent meeting with the general manager of the station to quickly act on the case.

Later Friday afternoon, a KTVI spokeswoman announced that Hughes has been fired and hence do not represent the station.

Bobby Hughes later rendered an apology to the lawyer of Michael Brown’s family and the Black police organization.

Michael Brown died in August 2014 as a result of police brutality. The 18-year-old Black boy was shot by a white cop by name, Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Mo. His sad death saw the rise of the Black community against the ongoing police brutalities.

Lezley McSpadden, Michael Brown’s mother did attend the Democratic National Convention which took place in Philadelphia but did not give any speech on the program.

Racism isn’t funny in any form; and especially when it results in someone losing his or her life, rights, wealth etc. Bobby Hughes probably didn’t think much before joking about the mother who had lost her child. Hardly anybody finds its funny except sick racists.
