Brooklyn DA Recommends NO JAIL Time For Ex-NYPD Killer Cop Peter Liang

The Gurley family and activists are outraged at DA Kenneth Thompson’s decision not to seek incarceration for Akai Gurley’s killer.

February 11 conviction of ex-NYPD cop, Peter Liang, over the slaying of an innocent unarmed 28-year old black man, Akai Gurley, brought hope to demonstrators, the mother of Gurley’s daughter, and the members of the Gurley clan that at last justice had been served.

For African American community and the activist groups, the conviction was a proof that black lives matter.

However, in a sudden turn of events, Brooklyn prosecutor, Kenneth Thompson, announced on Wednesday that he will not be demanding for Liang to be imprisoned over November 2014 killing.

Instead of 15 years in prison, as per the US Laws on manslaughter, Thompson recommended the judge that Liang gets 500 hours of community service, five years’ probation and home confinement for six months.

The announcement, which was made by the Brooklyn district attorney’s office just hours after the ex-NYPD rookie apologized to the mother of Gurley’s daughter, has outraged the Gurley family, who believe they were deceived by the prosecutor.

DA Thompson, who is also Black, has come under heavy criticism from both activists and the Gurley’s family over his no jail proposal, with many calling him a traitor for possibly ridding the African American community of long overdue justice.

According to Assemblyman Charles Barron (D-Brooklyn), Thompson’s inadequate sentencing recommendations has “sent a signal across the country that even a black man does not believe black lives matter.”

A district attorney’s call for clemency for a convicted ex-cop echoes a lot about America’s justice system, which has been plagued with bias.

Assuming the sides in this incident were reversed, imagine a civilian accidentally killing a cop. Would there be any mercy for him?

We hope the judge would do the only right thing in this case and sentence Akai according to the laws of the land.
