Armed New Jersey Cops Chased 10-Year-Old Black Boy

10-year-old Legend Preston was pursued by cops who had their weapons drawn after he was mistaken for a 20-year-old robbery suspect.

In a stunning display of incompetence, Newark police mistook 10-year-old Legend Preston for an adult offender. Preston who was playing basketball stepped onto the street to retrieve his ball when he found cops waiting for him with their guns in their hands. He panicked and ran towards neighbors and friends, prompting the cops to chase after him.

In an interview given to the New York Daily News, Legend’s mother Patisha Solomon expressed gratitude that her son came out of the incident alive.

“One wrong move and my child wouldn’t be here right now. My son could have tripped. He could have reached for a toy. They could have done anything to my son and it could have been his fault,” she said.

It boggles the mind how cops who must’ve undergone training could make such an enormous mistake. Legend had no physical resemblance to the robbery suspect, except for the color of his skin. It is obvious that the cops did not wait to positively identify the suspect before chasing after him with their weapons drawn; they simply saw a Black person fleeing and assumed he must be guilty of a crime. It seems that the only probable cause the cops need to arrest these days is for a person to be Black.

The cops who have displayed their incompetence in such an enormous way have not faced any disciplinary action. They continue to roam the street, even though it is has become clear that they represent a real danger to citizens. For white cops, a Black child is a culprit, for Black policemen a Black child is just a child. Which police officers would you like to see?
