Jay Anderson Fiancé: His Daughter Won’t Stop Kissing His Pictures

Interview with Starkeisha Delarosa, fiancé of Jay Anderson, who was murdered by a cop.

On June 23rd, 2016, Jay Anderson  was shot and killed by officer Joseph Mensah of the Wauwatosa Police Department. According to the family, Jay wasn’t doing anything suspicious when he was killed. The police, on the other hand, claim that Jay was acting suspicious when Officer Joseph Mensah approached his vehicle. However, no bodycam footage was taken, although dashcam footage of the incident has not been made available to the public. We talked to Starkeisha Delarosa, Jay’s fiancé, to find out more about what happened and what the family has been doing to obtain justice for Jay Anderson.

First of all, we’d like to know how you found out about Jay’s death.
Starkeisha Delarosa
A detective came to the house so we could identify him.

Do you have any idea of how he came to meet the police that day, what he was doing?
Starkeisha Delarosa
He was sleeping in the car at the park and Joseph, seeing him sleep in the park approached the car. They say he saw Jay putting a handgun on the seat. But they had no record of that, no evidence, no pictures or anything.

So you haven’t seen any footage that proves that he indeed had a gun?
Starkeisha Delarosa
No. They removed the gun before they started taking pictures or anything.

Did you get any official report?
Starkeisha Delarosa
No. I’ve seen them, I went over them, I read them. But they haven’t made anything public yet.

How are you planning to fight for justice for Jay?
Starkeisha Delarosa
We’re just going to keep doing what we have been doing, protesting, press conferences, to keep demanding for them to release the video, to release everything. We want to just keep calling, keep going down there to the DA’s office, doing what we have to do to keep his story alive.

Can you tell us about Jay? What kind of person was he? What kind of friends did he have? What did he like to do?
Starkeisha Delarosa
ay was a family man. He loved spending time with his kids, he loved spending time with his nephew, playing basketball with his friends and with the kids, playing video games. He loved barbecuing, he just was a family guy. He was a good guy.

Starkeisha Delarosa
We’re going to keep demanding that they release the video footage, we’re going to keep demanding that they release the officer’s statement. We want everyone to be able to see what we’ve seen in the video.

How is the family reacting to this tragic event? Have you received enough support from his family and friends?
Starkeisha Delarosa
Yes. His family’s still taking it day-by-day like I am. They’re still suffering, knowing that their son is not walking home, their son is not going to be walking to their door, they’re never going to see him again. We’re all taking it day-by-day. It’s still hard. His daughter talks about him non-stop, holding his pictures and kissing them. So it’s still hard on all of us.
