Criminal justice system lets Betty Shelby get $50,000 bail and be released less than half an hour after she turned herself in to authorities.
Tulsa Cop Betty Shelby was placed under arrest and released early Friday morning on a warrant for first-degree manslaughter charges in the dreadful killing of Terence Crutcher. The officer was arrested at 1 a.m. and about 20 minutes later, a $50,000 bond was posted.
According to an affidavit, The Tulsa County District Attorney’s office stated that Shelby operated “unreasonably by escalating the situation from a confrontation” and happened to be “emotionally involved.”
An internal affairs review seems to be ongoing as the Tulsa County Police Department is checking Shelby’s employment status.
After the charges were announced, Crutcher family attorney Damario Solomon-Simmons spoke at a press conference, “We are happy that charges were brought,” he said. “But, let me be clear. The family wants and deserves full justice, and full justice requires not just charges but a vigorous prosecution and a conviction to those who shot and killed Terence for no reason.”
The victim’s twin sister, Tiffany Crutcher expressed her gratitude to the community for their unrelenting support and desired the officer who killed her brother to be held accountable in her prosecution.
“Our goal as a family is to ensure that this never happens to an innocent citizen,” she said. “Rather than focus on the reprehensible actions of today we choose to celebrate Terence’s life, a life which he lived to the fullest every single day.”
But still, Shelby’s release shows how the criminal justice system favors all cops, even criminal cops who kill Black people in broad daylight without any justification. Betty Shelby has a history of domestic disturbances and the use of prohibited substances, but she still is not considered a potential danger. Her 20 minutes in jail looks like a mockery. Imagine a person of color committing the same crime and getting bail as soon as she did, it’s completely unimaginable in our system, which is based on implicit racism.
