Professor Imani Perry is a professor of African American studies at Princeton. She earned her doctorate and law degrees at Harvard University. On Saturday, 6th February, 2016, while on her way to work, she was arrested for a single parking ticket three years ago.
One may think that this is the police up on their toes enforcing the law, but upon a clear look it’s merely racial and uncouth. For a professor of her caliber to owe a 3-year-old parking fee might have been an oversight. Without a reminding letter, 2 police officers (male and female) did the arrest but the male officer was the one who did the body search and cuffed her and put her in the squad car.
This tells us how the police disrespect black women and do not honor their bodies. She was also refused to make any call before the arrest so that someone would know where she was. “At any rate, I was afraid. Many women who look like me have a much more frightening end to such arrests.” She wrote on her twitter page.
After this experience, her resolution is to move from being shaken to renewing her commitment to the struggle against racism. I think that she is a strong woman and we must support her to help weak Black American women who are constantly at risk of being harassed by the police.
