Musician and businessman John Legend is said to develop a new upcoming series by the name “Black Wall Street.” The story seeks to tell the true story of Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Greenwood neighborhood.

The Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa was one of the wealthiest places in America; where a lot of Black people lived in the early 20th century. But in May 1921, some white attackers burned down the entire community and killed a lot of Black people.

The new series stars famous actress, Tika Sumpter of “Southside With You” fame. According to the Deadline, John Legend’s production company, Get Lifted, has entered into an agreement with WGN America to produce the new series, “Black Wall Street.”

The first slave escape story, “Underground” by Get Lifted –production was broadcasted by the WGN station.

The head of Get Lifted productions expressed his joy working with WGN on the first movie. He said; “We’re so excited to continue to grow our relationship with WGN America,” Get Lifted’s Mike Jackson told Deadline. “Our experience working with them on ‘Underground’ has been fantastic. Mike also mentioned his expectation on the upcoming series which they will be working with Sumpter. He said; “Additionally, we’re looking forward to working with our friend Tika Sumpter to help tell this incredible story that many people know nothing about.”

Thanks to these Black entertainers and producers, the once forgotten community of Tulsa will again be in the limelight. This movie is a right step as the people of America deserve to know how the whites have tried in many years to put the Black man under oppression. We are of no doubt that this will be a very good movie and as well serve as a history lesson for many Black youths. It is time to tell the real story.
