Word Up – Black Lives Matter Activist Nyle Fort in Conversation


Nyle will share thoughts on his time in Ferguson, MO, his experience with the Black Lives Matter movement, and his organizing efforts in Newark, NJ and beyond. The talk will be followed by a group discussion about current organizing efforts within the movement, as well as concrete ways in which people can contribute.

Nyle Fort is a minister, organizer, and scholar based in Newark, NJ. After traveling to Ferguson, Missouri to protest the murder of Mike Brown, Nyle created Strange Fruit Speaks, a black church liturgy commemorating the last words of African Americans killed by police and vigilantes. Furthermore, he established Newark Books and Breakfast, a monthly political education program providing free books and breakfast to local youth and families. Most recently, Nyle travelled to Amsterdam and Palestine, as part of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation’s multinational effort to challenge radicalized violence and the Dream Defenders delegation to promote Black and Palestinian solidarity. Nyle is a Ph.D student in religion and African American studies at Princeton University.
