Police brutality cases in the United States can be traced back as far as 1872. This abuse of power by law enforcers has predominantly affected communities of color. In recent years, we have seen an increased exposure of this abuse through social media and news outlets. Our mission at Mestizo Institute of Culture & Arts is to serve the community by providing a space dedicated to social change through dialogue, arts, activism, and education. We are currently seeking artists whose work deals with themes of police brutality and violence against minority groups. Each artist should submit 3-4 works and these can be in a variety of mediums such as painting, drawing, photography, and ceramic pieces that can be hung on the walls. Perfoarmance pieces are also welcomed. Images of the works, titles, and a short paragraph explaining the pieces should all be submitted to [email protected] by Friday, September 30th, 2016. If chosen, these pieces will be exhibited in a group show at our gallery during the months of October and November.
