Black Alabama Parents Outraged Over A Racist Test

A math teacher placed on administrative leave for giving children tasks concerning gangs, drugs and prostitution.

When Erica Hall received the photo of a 10-question quiz given to her son, she could not believe her eyes. Not only all the tasks contained topics like stolen BMW’s, AK-47’s and knocking up women or similar, but the main characters had names like Ramon, Leroy, Pedro and Tyrone, which are typical for people of color.

Find some examples of those tasks, given to 8th-graders below.

“Tyrone knocked up 4 girls in the gang. There are 20 girls in his gang. What is the exact percentage of the girls Tyrone knocked up?”

“Leroy has 2 ounces of cocaine. If he sells an 8 ball to Antonio for $320 and 2 grams to Juan for $85 per gram, what is the street value of the rest of his hold?”

At first, the kids thought their tasks were a part of a joke by their veteran mathematics teacher, but she told them that “it wasn’t a joke, and they had to complete it, and turn it in,” Ms. Hall insisted. This ‘joke’ has been circulating over the internet for quite long, it used to be even in the racist mails of formal South Florida police chief Richard E. Perez, who sent it to his staff but resigned as soon as it had been revealed.

“Urban schools are finally starting to teach practical math that these kids can use in real-world situations!!” one of the phrases in his e-mails said.

When we hear of such things, it is very hard to imagine that we are talking about the 21st century and a free democratic country. It is also sad that the negative image of a black person is engraved in the hearts of our kids at school already.
