The federal grand jury brought charges against Michael Slager in Walter Scott shooting.
This Wednesday the court decided to bring three federal charges against Officer Michael Slager, who, according to the video recorded by an onlooker, shot and killed an unarmed black man, Walter Scott on April 4, 2015.
Slager, 34, is being indicted on state charges, but the court ruling may become an additional way to convict Slager in Scott’s death. The federal grand jury accuses Slager of killing Scott “without legal justification, willfully depriving him of the right, secured and protected by the constitution and laws of the United States, to be free from the use of unreasonable force by a law enforcement officer.”
Besides that, Michael Slagger is charged with obstruction of justice. He allegedly “intentionally [misled] South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigators in statements he provided in connection with SLED’s investigation” of the case and “falsely stated that he (SLAGER) fired his weapon at Scott while Scott was coming forward at him with a Taser.” The video clearly shows that the former North Charleston officer killed the 50-year old forklift operator while he was running away, thus adding to the use of a weapon during a crime of violence to the mentioned charges.
Surprisingly all the blatant lies and let-outs haven’t saved the former officer, who literally felt scot-free for killing Walter Scott while on duty from facing the responsibility.
Though cases when federal charges are brought against a police officer, who became a murderer on duty, are very few, we celebrate it with the hope of seeing the day when justice becomes habitual in this country.
