Luis Machado, the NYPD lieutenant, who oversaw the arrest of a Brooklyn mail carrier, has been stripped of his gun and badge and placed on desk duty.
Luis Machado, the New York City police lieutenant, who supervised the arrest of the Brooklyn mail carrier Glen Grays, has been stripped of his gun and badge and placed on desk duty, the New York Post reports.
An investigation into the incident concluded that the four cops involved – Lt. Luis Machado and Officers Lazo Lluka, Miguel Rodriguez and David Savella – acted inappropriately when they pulled over Grays and forcefully arrested him for unfounded reasons.
According to sources close to the probe, Machado, who also faces losing as much as a year’s vacation, will bear the heaviest punishment, because it was his job as the supervisor to control the situation, which he clearly did not.
The incident took place on March 17, when Grays yelled at four men for recklessly trying to run him over. It turned out the men were cops in plainclothes driving an unmarked vehicle.
The cops backed up their car to confront Grays, who was then arrested for disorderly conduct by the order of the lieutenant.
Grays was handcuffed, patted down, and then taken to the precinct, where he was given summons and released several hours later.
The officers left his mail truck in a double-parked position on the busy President Street without alerting an NYPD tow truck or the U.S. Postal Service to remove it to ease the traffic and safeguard its contents.
On Tuesday Police Commissioner Bill Bratton expressed “strong concerns” over the encounter, which was caught on camera.
Finally someone is being punished for harassing and unnecessarily arresting an innocent black man!
Lieutenant Machado deserves his punishment! This should serve as a precedent to all police officers who get off on harassing black people.
We hope such level of fairness in the application of justice could be employed in cases involving killings of unarmed men and women of color.
