Officers are on trial for attacking and beating up a black inmate of Rikers Island in New York.
About three and half years ago an inmate, Jahmal Lightfoot, was brutalized by 10 guards, who savagely beaten him after he ‘locked eyes’ with Supervising Warden Eliseo Perez. Perez allegedly told a team of officers to attack the prisoner, adding, “I want you to knock his f—ing teeth in”. Some of Lightfoot’s teeth were knocked out, his nose was broken.
After this awful incident, three officers tried to cover up what actually happened by falsely reporting that the inmate was first to attack the officers.
Rikers Island with about 10,000 inmates has over the years been obsessed with different forms of abuse. When Lightfoot was released in 2014 after serving a sentence for robbery, he filed a case against the officers and now they are going to face the trial.
