Chicago Ousts Its Top Prosecutor, Triumph Of BLM

Attorney Anita Alvarez voted out for condoning police brutality, condemning the innocent and dooming children to the school-to-prison pipeline.

On Tuesday, through ballot papers, Chicago voters expressed their dissatisfaction and said “enough is enough” to Cook County State’s Attorney, Anita Alvarez, who has in her two terms as prosecutor protected guilty police officers, accused the innocent and doomed children to the school-to-prison pipeline.

The ouster scores a significant victory for the Black Lives Matter movement, whose activists have voiced out their dissatisfaction with the Chicago area’s top prosecutor.

Attorney Anita Alvarez lost her job to Black Lives Matter movement backed Democratic primary challenger, Kim Foxx, in a campaign dominated by the controversy of her poor handling of the shooting of unarmed black teen Laquan McDonald committed by a white police officer.

The controversial top prosecutor, who has mishandled cases involving police brutality and allowed miscarriages of justice against men and women of color in Chicago, provoked nationwide rage for covering up the shooting of Laquan McDonald and waiting 13 months to bring charges against the Chicago police officer, despite emergence of evidence and dashcam footage that showed the police officer shooting McDonald 16 times.

Alvarez’s ouster underscores the power of activism and the limit of tyranny. This should remind all elected officials that they must work for the people and not against them.

We hope Kim Foxx will keep her promises of transparency and accountability, and will work hard to reduce incarceration rates and to eliminate the school-to-prison pipeline, which are very critical to ending the cycle of crime and poverty in African American communities.
