21!

Happy Birthday!

As a “WOKE” mother of an African American male child, this season should be one I honor, hold near and dear, commemorate, get great enjoyment in watching his matriculation, setting professional, personal and academic goals and aiming to reach those goals, BUT IT IS HARD.
I am one of those “sneaky” celebratory moms; I DO IT AFTER IT IS ALL OVER! Why? Because I know that society is NOT ecstatic that he is educated, brilliant, forward thinking, refusing to fall prey to the statistical data placed upon his life so therefore, I AWAIT on the ills that plague our young men of color.
I DO KNOW THAT I AM NOT EXEMPT.
YES, he will celebrate his 21st Birthday, the same day as OUR 44TH President, Barack H. Obama, what a treat, joy and model!
Raising him in an inner city, I saw things he refused, I felt things he couldn’t and I knew things he didn’t so I STAYED ON HIM attempting to steer him in the RIGHT direction and I am elated to say boldly and proudly that, HE MADE IT TO 21.
HE WAS INTENTIONAL IN:
Defying the odds
Bumping his head but yet, learning valuable lessons
Positioning himself in the direction towards greatness
Realizing that he can’t be associated with people in the chicken coop because he was an EAGLE
Learning life lessons in the most efficient and expedient manner
Conquering his giants (inward and outward)
Defeating his enemies
Being triumphant in EVERY race he entered
Choosing to NOT allow a zip code dictate who he was, where he could go, and reaching successes that was intentionally out of reach, HE DID IT EVERYTIME!
Purposefully annihilating his naysayers and doubters
Demolishing his purposeful life’s roadblocks
Hammering tests that “measured” his brilliance and intellect when the price tags were astronomical
Listening to what was spoken over his life and changing the narrative
Disobeying his teachers because he knew what was deeply within and inferiority, no, ignorance and lack wasn’t
Flaunting his boldness, his understanding of the spoken and written word and his education attainment beyond his age and grade
Appearing to some haughty, arrogant, vain, pompous when in reality he was DEFIANT, DARING, BOLD, CONFIDENT, ASSURED, AND DETERMINED
Disregarding what was said and wrote and chose to edit, and rewrite his truth
Ignoring what was the norm and went down a path that wasn’t even paved and began leaving trails

Breaching contracts that had etched in stone EVERYTHING HE WAS BECOMING that he shouldn’t become.

To reach his 21st year of birth is ANY BLACK MAN’S RITE OF PASSAGE, MILESTONE, HIGH ACHIEVEMENT, LANDMARK, AND OWNERSHIP.
