On Wednesday the footage recorded by the rear-facing camera of the of an officer’s squad car, where Reynolds and her daughter were kept for about an hour was released after a public records request.
This video tells a horrible story of grief, fear, anger and helplessness.
“If you tell somebody to put their hands up and you tell them to reach for something at the same time, they can’t put their hands up and reach at the same time,” Diamond Reynolds is heard saying. “How you gonna get your license and registration with your hands in the air?”
And Reynolds’ little kid unexpectedly turns out to be a real hero. She comforts her mother and does her best to make her feel safe.
“Mom, please stop cussing and screaming ’cause I don’t want you to get shooted,” the girl sobs but then adds, “I can keep you safe.”
Larry Rogers, the civil rights attorney is sure that the video will help the public to understand that Philando Castile was murdered and the acquittal of Officer Yanez was a terrible mistake. “It’s important for the public to see exactly what he did to Philando. It’s important for the public to see the trauma he caused Diamond and her daughter.”

It’s upsetting to see how much effort is required to make the authorities understand the things that are obvious even for a 4-year-old, who tells “I wish this town was safer… I don’t want it to be like this anymore.”
