Niija Kuykendall: I dreamed of pursuing photojournalism

Meet Niija Kuykendall, senior vice-president of production in Warner Brothers Pictures.

Power moves: With credits ranging from Argo to the Magic Mike franchise. Niija Kuykendall, according to Essence magazine,  is gearing up for Tomb Raider, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and A Star Is Born.

Bigger picture: “I dreamed of pursuing photojournalism and documentary film-making while traveling the world. When I saw Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust, my interest shifted to narrative film.”

Trusting oneself: “In this business, it’s important to trust your instincts. If you love [a project], you have to be able to articulate it, advocate for it and stand by it, even if it’s a risk.”

Staying up: “Well-told stories inspire me. Seeing an amazing movie or meeting an amazing director keeps me motivated.”
