The Uhuru Movement (the word Uhuru means ‘freedom’ in Swahili) led by the African People's Socialist Party (APSP) is a group of organizations fighting for the liberation of Africans both on the continent of Africa and the African Diaspora. Led by Omali Yeshitela, the Uhuru movement was founded in 1972, and although it faced a lot of persecution and repression, it has grown into an international organization championing the African Liberation Movement around the world. We were very delighted when Chairman Omali agreed to talk to us himself to give us an insider view on the workings of the movement. In the first article in this series, Chairman Omali explains to us the international status of the movement, how they were able to stand the persecution of Black rights movements in the 70s and 80s and how the Uhuru Movement collaborates with other movements of our era.

The popular musician finally broke his silence on touching political issues as he voiced his concern about the treatment of Black people in the country

The Weeknd, who has become quite prominent in the music industry after dropping several hit songs and a hugely successful album, has recently spoken about political issues in the country. He tweeted about Black Lives Matter and canceled a performance on Jimmy Kimmel in May because it came to his attention that a presidential candidate was also making an appearance on that same episode.

enough is enough. it's time to stand up for this. we can either sit and watch, or do something about it. the time is now. #blacklivesmatter
— The Weeknd (@theweeknd) July 7, 2016

He claimed that he broke a promise he made to himself. He never wanted to get political, as his only concern was making good music as usual. But recent cases of police shootings forced his hand. He expressed his dismay at how Blacks are badly treated by the police in the country.
“I promised myself that I would never tweet or talk about politics and focus on the music, but I was just so bewildered that we lost more of our people to these senseless police shootings,” he says in the publication’s Fall/Winter 2016 cover story. “It’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that there are people who can’t or won’t see what Black Lives Matter is trying to accomplish. I wish I could make music about politics. I feel like it’s such an art and a talent that I admire tremendously, but when I step into the studio I step out of the real world, and it’s therapeutic. It’s an escape, but recently it’s been very hard to ignore, and it’s also been very distracting. Maybe you’ll hear it in my voice, but it is not my forté.”

The racial tension is quite obvious for everyone to see. It’s absolutely disgusting that in a country like ours that is so racially diverse, Black people suffer from Police brutality so often. The cops are supposed to protect the people, not just a few but all the people. We believe it is high time the oppression of Blacks stopped. Enough is enough.
After another summer filled with tension between the Black community and the police, many popular Black stars have spoken out about the systemic racism in the country. After the murders of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling. The Game took a stand against social injustice. Even Drake, who usually stays mute, spoke against the racial tension in the U.S.

A research team from UC Berkeley found out that the lives of Blacks and whites could be cut short if they live in disconcerted racist communities

Researchers made a comparison of the racial prejudice of about 1.4 million people throughout the nation and the rate of death in over 1,700 counties in the country. They came to the conclusion that Blacks and whites who live in racist communities are liable to die from heart disease and other circulatory diseases with the Blacks being more susceptible because the oppression on them is higher.
“This suggests that living in a racially hostile environment might be detrimental to both the group targeted by this bias, in this case Blacks, as well as the group that harbors the bias, in this case whites,” said study lead author Jordan Leitner, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at UC Berkeley.

Unfortunately this isn't surprising, but it's still disturbing "White racism tied to fatal heart disease for blacks"https://t.co/D23YEGGhFv
— Veronica Derricks (@vderrick1025) September 8, 2016

The researchers took age, education, income, population, rural, urban and other factors that might impact health into consideration when the study was carried out. They discovered that Blacks living in more blinkered neighborhoods have less access to affordable health care, while the whites have more access, irrespective of the racial bias in their neighborhoods.
In an analysis that was made by the researchers, they measured explicit and implicit bias in relation to race. Explicit bias is the more conscious bias and implicit bias refers to subdued automatic bias. “We found that whites’ explicit bias was more powerful than their implicit bias at predicting negative health outcomes for blacks,” Leitner said. “One possibility is that Blacks in racially hostile communities experience lower quality health care, or may avoid seeking health care, even if it is available, because they feel like they won’t be treated fairly,” Leitner added.

Based on this research, I think it’s safe to say that if Blacks live together in a community without any racist whites, we are going to be less liable to face racial hostility, or better still, live better lives without being prone to having heart or circulatory diseases. Racism kills people! Live freely and open-mindedly.

The originator of Professional Black Girl, Dr. Yaba Blay is an undoubtedly number one voice when it comes to beauty politics.
As an activist, she has done so well to bring to light the very uniqueness of a Black woman. She did a number of projects to confirm her supreme love for African- American women.

Notably amongst her fight for Black women are (1)ne Drop project—to affirming melanin as black and beautiful as the universe with Pretty Period. She is indeed all one can say about the value of Melanin.

Black women have really dazzled society with their illuminating beauty. Dr Yaba continued and said “the terminology that is often used to describe and define black girls—such as ‘bad,’ ‘grown,’ ‘fast,’ ‘ghetto’ and ‘ratchet’—are non-affirming and are words that are intended to kill the joy and magic within all black girls.”

Further quoting Dr Yaba word for word, she said “We are professional code-switchers, hair flippers, hip shakers and go-getters. We hold Ph.D.s and listen to trap music; we twerk and we work. We hold it down while lifting each other up, and we don’t have to justify or explain our reason for being. This is us.”

“We do not subscribe to what ‘respectability’ gatekeepers call black-girl stereotypes,” Blay continues. “We are Professional Black Girl prototypes.”

“A program in African-American studies is very difficult to sustain in good times, and it’s near impossible in tough economic times,” Johnny Taylor, president and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund said.

Low enrollment numbers in African-American studies program, which is offered in 12 Illinois universities, has prompted many of the universities to reshuffle their programs; others have taken the program out of their curriculum completely. Funding for the program has been in doubt, and that has played its role in the situation.

According to reports, only 13 students selected the African- American studies major as their field of study for the 2015-2016 academic year at the Western Illinois University, which has led to the institution suspending the program this summer. The number of students who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the major was appalling, as only 3 students graduated.

The low numbers in graduation and enrollment could be quite disadvantageous to a major that has come under criticism in recent times. “Since African-American studies has been formed, there’s always been a battle to remain alive,” said Kelly Harris, associate professor and coordinator of African-American studies at Chicago State University. “It’s not just an African-American studies fight. The humanities and social sciences all feel like we’re under attack in this environment where universities tend to have a business mentality in the ways they look at higher education now.”

Some professors have stated that the program is undergoing such difficulties because it isn’t listed in the students’ core curriculum like other subjects and a major part of the problem boils down to underfunding.

“Black studies (departments) across this country were not put on college campuses because faculty saw the inherent validity of the discipline,” said Joseph A. Brown, Africana studies professor at Southern Illinois University. “They were put there because of community agitation and student unrest. So they’ve always been under a political scrutiny that history and sociology haven’t been under. These programs, in the minds of many people, don’t belong on college campuses anyway.”

This is quite appalling. Why there is no funding for such an important issue. The government has to do something about this because African-American studies deserves to be a core program in schools’ curriculums. But it seems like nobody cares about it. This program is the key to eradicating racism. Let people learn the facts and details of the history and the current state of the issue. Funds should be provided in order to keep them running. The program is as important as any other and shouldn’t have to be scrutinized.

Ferguson activist, Darren Seals was found dead in a burning vehicle on Tuesday morning

Darren Seals, 29, became well known as an activist for his outstanding work following the killing of Michael Brown.

Seals was pronounced dead when crews were alerted to a scene of a car in flames. His body was discovered after the fire was extinguished. Police have classed their investigation in the case as a homicide after they found out that the victim was shot.

Investigations are ongoing and up till this moment, there have been no suspects named by the cops. At a time when the tension between the Black community and law enforcement is high, this untimely death of Seals comes as a shocker to his family and friends, because he was a peaceful person.

His name was Darren Seals. RIP. pic.twitter.com/Cd4NQuqBvX
— Torraine Walker (@TorraineWalker) 6 сентября 2016 г.

Seals rose to fame in recent years after he reportedly arrived at the scene of Brown’s death just after he was shot and killed. He saw Brown’s body lying in the street and he was touched by his unfair death. Seals had some words to say about the case and he also contributed immensely to the ongoing discussion of police brutality and Black Lives Matter.

It remains unknown as to who shot Seals or set his vehicle on fire. But taking into account the kind of work Seals did as an activist against police brutality and how stern he stood for the rights of black people, thinking he was murdered by people who saw that his activism was uncovering the truth about the system wouldn’t be a farfetched thought. However, we`ll never know the truth, due to the opaqueness of how things are done, the offenders surely won`t disclose themselves.

Ferguson Missouri young black activist Darren Seals murdered. NO COINCIDENCE! The police threatened him when they pulled him over 2 mos ago

— Blood Chocolate (@Bloodchocolate1) 7 сентября 2016 г.

The deceased family, friends and other activists have taken to social media to mourn the loss of their loved one. It’s such an unfortunate death for a vibrant and talented young man. He was an assembly line worker and hip-hop artist back in 2014 when he took the time to urge community members not to vote for the local Democrats.

Praying for peace comfort and strength to the family of #activist #DarrenSeals #Missouri #Ferguson #BlackLivesMatter

We express our deepest condolences to his family and friends. His death is a tragedy and all the chances of a bright future have been obliterated. We hope justice prevails and the guilty party is punished. Rest in peace, Darren Seals, your voice will be heard.

Two Black teens, Vanae Wright and Leilani Green were questionably arrested at a Whataburger restaurant in Texas

The girls were eating at a San Antonio Whataburger when they were approached by two sheriff deputies and arrested by them on made up charges.

The incident took place last Friday. The 17-year-old Wright bought food at the eatery with her friends. They were about to eat when cops arrived. The cops had received a call that there was a brawl at the restaurant parking lot, Vanae’s father, Vaughn Wright said.

“When the kids ran in, I guess the police didn’t know who was who, and instead of them finding out, they just automatically attempted to clear the whole restaurant,” Vaughn Wright stated.

A video of the incident, which emerged on Tuesday and has been circulating online, showed Wright sitting in a corner in the restaurant, when deputy Cynthia Hernandez walked up to her and told her to stand up, the teen was doing just that when the deputy threw her food to the floor and placed her in handcuffs. Green brought Wright’s hat and was about to put it on the handcuffed teen’s head when she was also apprehended by the second BCSO deputy.

— Mr. It Is Our Duty (@Mr_ItIsOurDuty) September 6, 2016

The sheriff’s department reported that the restaurant’s manager told everyone to leave the place, but Wright didn’t. She was arrested for trespassing and Green was arrested for interfering with the arrest, the department’s spokesman, Keith said. However, Daryl Washington, the lawyer representing the Wright family thinks otherwise. “They were clearly treated that way – it’s obvious – because of their race, there’s no reason to treat two paying customers in that manner. They were not violating any law,” Washington said.

— Ciara Watson (@ciarawatson05) September 7, 2016

Someone at the scene called Vanae’s parents, telling them about the incident. The Wrights arrived and asked Deputy Hernandez what happened and about the possibility of releasing their kid. Hernandez responded that the teen was disrespectful and maybe they raised their daughter that way.

SATX4, a grassroots organization that’s striving to end systemic racism, protested in the San Antonio area in support of the two girls. The organization also put an online petition in order for Hernandez to be expelled from the department and it has already garnered over 2,800 signatures.

The cops received a report about a fight outside the restaurant; they arrived and arrested the first Black teen they saw in the restaurant. If this isn’t racial profiling then I don’t know what it is. The incompetence in the law enforcement is so palpable. The teens didn’t deserve the treatment they got from the officers.

A Jimmy John’s delivery woman, Courtney Chancellor was placed under arrest after she apparently lied about being robbed by a Black man.

Courtney Chancellor fabricated a story and told the police about how she was put at gunpoint by a Black male at the University of Missouri last Thursday. The 23-year-old was arrested after the police found out it was all a lie. She was later released with a citation for filing a false report with authorities.

The sub sandwich chain delivery woman got in touch with campus police at 8:35 p.m. on Thursday to report that she had been robbed at gunpoint. She went ahead to give details about the robbery by describing the person she claimed to be the attacker: a 6 feet tall Black man, in his 20’s, he had a large tattoo on his upper arm and he also had facial hair.

The report prompted the school to immediately send out a warning to its students, telling them about an imaginary Black man who put a gun to a delivery driver’s head and asked for money. “MU police officers are currently investigating the situation,” the warning read. “Safety is the university’s top priority and we are working hard to assure that the campus remains safe while information is obtained and confirmed.”

The Columbia Police Department helped the Missouri University campus police by taking a close look at the surveillance footage of the area. They discovered that the 23-year-old was the only person who emerged in the video, which made it absolutely clear that she fabricated the story and there was no robbery at all.

After the discovery by the police, Chancellor came clean and confirmed that she lied. “There was a substantial amount of resources, both from first responders and those who were assisting, with this false report,” said MU spokesperson Christian Basi. The school authorities later alerted everyone in the school premises that there wasn’t any threat on the campus and there was no robbery after all.

It has been reported that Chancellor isn’t a student of MU and it remains unknown as to why she decided to describe the “fictional robber” as a Black man. It’s sad to see a person lie just to taint the image of Black people. Without any footage, there would have been a search for an imaginary suspect all around the campus. And that could lead to all sorts of trouble for any bearded black male in his 20’s with a tattoo on his upper hand. However, it’s good news that the liar was caught.

Eurie Stamps’ family has been settled after he was killed by “accident” five years ago in a SWAT raid.

On January 5, 2011, Eurie Stamps, a grandfather and retired Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority worker, was murdered by Officer Paul Duncan during a SWAT raid on his home. Stamps was innocent and he wasn’t suspected of any crime.

After 5 years of pain for Stamps’ family, a settlement has been reached between the family and the town of Framingham. However, specifics of the compensation haven’t been released to the public yet.

The 68-year-old was killed when a Framingham SWAT team raided his home, in order to arrest his stepson, Joseph Bushfan, who was suspected of selling drugs. The cops caught up with Bushfan outside the home, but they proceeded to break into the home and used flash-bang grenades. Stamps immediately laid down on the floor and surrendered with his hands above his head but Duncan approached him and shot him in the head.

The case was investigated; Duncan told the authorities that he tried to restrain Stamps by kneeling on his back and he accidentally shot him. The shooting was confirmed an accident in a press statement by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office in March 2011. Duncan didn’t face charges, as he was put back to work the following month after being on paid leave during the investigation. “There is no reason for him not to come back to work. He didn’t commit a crime,” Police Chief Steven Carl said then.

According to court records, the suit was dismissed by the U.S. District Court Judge f. Dennis Saylor on Friday, stating that both parties had come to an agreement on the case. Framingham town and Duncan’s representative, Leonard Kesten announced that the details of the settlement will only be made public after everything is finalized. “The Defendants are pleased that the parties have reached an acceptable resolution of this unfortunate matter,” Kesten wrote in an email.

Another Black man bites the dust and the cop who killed him is free yet again. Duncan killed Stamps in cold blood, but he was let go after he claimed the shooting was an accident. What was he doing with his weapon drawn on an innocent man, who had already surrendered and laid on the ground? Justice seems to be a far cry in cases of police brutality on Blacks. We can only continue to stand in solidarity and hope justice will prevail.

Portland Oregon’s east precinct police officers were proven to be liars for giving unlawful orders.

A certain group of camera activists, who call themselves ‘copblockers’, usually do what they can to expose the police for their wrongdoings by taking videos of them and posting them on the internet.

In this case, some weeks ago, a certain Mike Bluehair and his friend Robert West, who are copblockers, were given orders by sergeants of the Portland Police from East Precinct to move away from the front of the precinct. It turned out to be an unlawful order, as the sidewalk in front of the precinct is public property.

A fellow copblocker heard about the issue and decided to go to the east precinct to see for himself, why police officers would lie in order to make people leave a place they have every right to be in. He was accompanied by three other copblockers , he was followed by one of them to the front of the precinct, and the other two were filming from across the street.

A sergeant, accompanied by two other cops, came out of the precinct and repeated the laws they forged by telling the men that it wasn’t allowed for them to loiter in front of the precinct. The copblockers went on to prove to the sergeants that they were lying about the law.

The precinct had recently arrested a camera activist, Eric Eugene Crowl after his car was illegally searched and they found a rifle and a pistol locked up in his car. Although he had a license for the firearms, he was charged with unlawful possession, unlawful use of a weapon and attempted assault of a public safety officer. His bail was set at $1million dollars.

With the help of these camera activists, we can see the kind of lies and made up laws the police say in order to do whatever they want. It isn’t right for officers to continue to twist and bend the rules whenever they deem fit. They are there to uphold the laws and not lie about them.

Michael DeWalt created the new ride app to help generate wealth and make ride-sharing easier for the Black community.

Michael DeWalt, a Peoria, Illinois native, in order to make ride sharing easier for the Black community, he created the app, Ride. He also launched the app with the aim of improving the Black economy.

DeWalt stated that he was inspired by Black authors Dr.Boyce Watkins, a finance professor, who wrote books encouraging Blacks to create the opportunity themselves and not wait for the white people to hire them and Dr. Claud Anderson, a cultural expert, who has egged Black people on to gain knowledge from immigrants’ use of group economics to make sure riches are generated and kept in the community.

“I was inspired by great teachers to build something Black-owned,” DeWalt said. “I figure what better way to build something than starting a mobile application. I decided to start with a ride-sharing application as I saw [a] big opportunity in that market.”

The Charlotte, North Carolina-based company owner created the application with a team of engineers, who were his classmates at the Illinois University. The app allows drivers and passengers to create business for each other. Hundreds of users currently use this from over 24 American cities, as well as abroad in countries like Nigeria, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The 30-year-old said that the landscape company he formed last year helped him to grow and become a better entrepreneur, as it helped teach him how to get resources to start a company and also gave him the great idea of creating a platform rather than a labor service.

The app was created with the incentive to make sure that there is a circulation of money in the Black economy and also to create a service cheaper than Uber and Lyft. “Ride app provides [the] opportunity to be a driver and make money for the Black community, if the app continues to grow, drivers could do it fully or part-time to generate income.”

“The goal is for the app to be known worldwide, I want to generate enough wealth to help Black communities build our own libraries, schools, grocery stores, police departments [and] distribution centers,” Dewalt said.

We support Michael DeWalt in his commendable endeavors to help the Black community and make it a better place. We surely do need development in our community, and that’s what DeWalt is all about. We hope his app reaches the apex of ride services.

Both ‘RideBe a Passenger’ and ‘RideBe a Driver’ are available on Google Play and Apple Store.

Black women, who were human computers behind the biggest breakthrough in aeronautics, seem to have been forgotten by history.

The untold story of the brilliant Black women who made great contributions to the space race in the 1940s is to be depicted in a new movie and an upcoming book.

Margot Lee Shetterly, who grew up in the midst of intelligent female mathematicians and scientists in Hampton, Virginia, would go on to work in NASA like her father. “I would see them in the context of community organizations or church, or you’d run into them at the grocery store – they were my parents’ friends,” she says. It was an outstanding surrounding for her to grow up and have a great career, although it seemed normal to Lee Shetterly that so many Black women in her community had long careers at Langley, NASA’s research center.

Lee Shetterly, in her book (Hidden Figures), wrote about the Black women who did such great jobs in making some of the giant strides in aeronautics in 1940. Back then, just two percent of Black women attained a university degree and a half of them went on to become teachers. However, a few defied all odds and joined NASA (then known as the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, NACA). The women made huge differences in some of the defining moments of the 20th century.

“For a long time, African-Americans were not allowed to read and write, we forget but it was not that long ago. Women were barred from studying at many colleges. If you are not able to read and write, then you are not going to be able to tell your own story. There haven’t been critical masses of women; minorities, whatever, and I think that’s something that is changing now,” Lee Shetterly said, after Katherine Johnson, a mathematician and scientist, whose calculations helped the moon landing, was honored with America’s highest civilian honor, The Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Lee Shetterly’s book, which has been turned into a movie, will star Taraji P Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae. They play the roles of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Christine Darden respectively, who were ‘human computers’ in NASA and later worked their way up to become leaders of the engineering groups.

These Black women transcended sexism and racism to take on some of the most important scientific work in the world back then. Despite the fact that their great achievements have been forgotten by America’s history, such achievements can’t be hidden forever. The sheer brilliance of these Black women will be there for all to read and see in Lee Shetterly’s book and the upcoming film.

The issue of workers not being paid in accordance with hours they put in is a big problem in our society.

Wage theft in our present society is one of the labor violations low wage labor workers have been facing. Many of the workers don’t get paid what they have earned. By honoring the contributions of workers in our nation, structural racism and practically stealing labor shouldn’t be the way to show appreciation for their hard work.

The presence of wage theft is made up of limits in oversight, legal loopholes, institutional and structural racism people of color endure. The UCLA Labor Center has defined wage theft as the unlawful practice of not paying workers for all their labor, which comprises of not paying minimum wage and the need for workers to work off the clock.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) which was signed into law by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1938 is the foundation of current labor laws in America. The establishment of minimum wage and overtime pay are among the obligations of the FLSA. When it was first put into law, traditional Black labor sites in the fields and homes were excluded from the protection of the FLSA. It was only modified to cover most farmers and domestic workers in 1966 and 1974 respectively, after persistent protests by women’s rights and civil rights advocates.

“The country is experiencing a wage theft epidemic of staggering proportions,” the National Employment Law Project illustrated. Taxi drivers, for example, aren’t entitled to overtime pay even though a majority of them work extra hours. Restaurant workers, who earn far below the federal minimum wage, are classed at “tipped earners,” because it is believed that the tips they receive are enough to fill the wage gap.

The vulnerability of undocumented labor workforce, which highly consists of people of color, can’t be overstated. Most of them are in low-skill and low-wage jobs. According to the Economic Policy institute (EPI), workers of the undocumented workforce lose $50 billion annually to wage theft.

Labor Day was celebrated a few days back, but it should be a celebration for all the labor force and not a few, as the wage inequalities in our society are stark. Economic security for the most vulnerable workers in our society should be boosted and curbing wage theft should be of precedence.

“My brother was killed in his sleep and we’re all out here to make sure the officer goes to jail,” Carniellius Branton, the older brother of Levonia Riggins explains the reason for their protest.

The aggrieved Black community of Clair-Mel, Hillsborough has been on the streets for past six days to state their displeasure about the killing of Levonia Riggins, an unarmed Black man.

Riggins was shot by a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy after his house was raided upon a tip off for allegedly dealing in drugs. Though the police didn’t find enough trace of evidence which substantiates their claim, the life of the young Black man wasn’t spared. Riggings was shot in his bedroom through the window by the officer.

Friends, family, and loved ones have demonstrated solidarity for their Black brother since the incident happened on Tuesday. But on Monday, the aggrieved community members upgraded their protest.

Some 30 demonstrators gathered at the Tampa Family Health Center near the Causeway Boulevard and S 78th Street crossroads at about 12 noon and marched to the Get and Go Food Mart, the place Riggins worked until his sudden demise.

The angry protesters stood at the S 78th Street and continued to chant words of solidarity and a call for justice. They held placards with inscriptions such as “Rest in Peace,” “Jail Killer Cops.” Protesters could also be heard saying , “Cops in my hood ain’t no good, What do we want? Justice. When do we want it? Now.” The heavy presence of the demonstrators forced the police to close that section of the road to motorists for about 3 hours.

Carniellius Braton, the older brother of Riggins lamenting over the death of his brother said, “My brother was killed in his sleep and we’re all out here to make sure the officer goes to jail.”

Pastor Andrew Joseph whose 14-year-old son was killed by cops 2 years ago stated his displeasure about the police brutalities. He said, “We’ve been fighting this fight and making baby steps when we should be making giant steps. We have not seen a change in this community. The police don’t look like us and the trust is gone.”

https://twitter.com/Tampa4Justice/status/772992801600598016

Demonstrators have said that the protest will continue until an appropriate response is gotten from the police.

We are sick and tired of the rampant brutalities unleashed on us. Black is a race and deserves to live just like any other person. We stand in solidarity with family and friends of Riggins as they mourn their loved one. But we call for action to be taken by the law enforcement to bring the officer to book. We demand justice.

“Black businesses, even though they have been growing, have lagged behind the growth of other groups,” Thomas Boston, a professor of economics and internal affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology said.

According to a new report by the U.S. Census Bureau, African-Americans are still behind their counterparts when it comes to business ownership. Though it seems the gap is gradually being bridged, it is at a much slower pace.

The survey revealed that, although Black-Americans constitute 12% of the entire U.S. population, they own only 3.3% of businesses in the U.S.A which have been in existence for the past two years and beyond.

This figure has however seen an appreciable level of increase as compared to that of 2014. The 2014 annual census survey recorded a much lower figure of 2.1%, being businesses owned by Black people with at least an employee.

Moreover, the major factor that has hindered the progress of the Black-Americans in the area of business ownership was America’s economic recession. They were the most affected by the financial meltdown. According to the Wall Street Journal, most of the Black-owned businesses were established after the 2008 economic recession.

However, the survey conducted only recognized businesses with paid employees. This means that self-owned businesses weren’t taken into account during the research.

Furthermore, the business survey revealed that out of about 5.2 million businesses sampled, white-owned businesses formed the majority with about 81% of America’s businesses. Asian and Hispanic-owned businesses formed 9.7% and 5.8% respectively.

Thomas Boston, a professor of economics and internal affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology stated that “Black businesses, even though they have been growing, have lagged behind the growth of other groups.”

On the other hand, between 2002 and 2007, Black-owned businesses increased by a higher rate of 60%, Fortune reports. This saw a drastic decline during and after 2008. This is further proving that Black-American’s are the most affected by the nation’s financial meltdown.

Also, many Black-American business owners suffer from government financial policies during recessions. When they are measures to cut down on the financial burden of the country, the most affected are the private-owned businesses which happen to be mostly Blacks.

The canker of discrimination is yet obviously present in our country. The Black-American seems to be adversely affected in every area of the system. This clearly looks like a purposed action to keep the Black person oppressed and impoverished.

Nonetheless, we have started the journey to total freedom and we will keep at it till we are fully liberated.

Thee Rant, an unofficial cop website on Monday made very distasteful online posts, mocking the organizers of the J’Ouvert celebration.

This year’s J’Ouvert celebration in Brooklyn once again was marred by a horrific incident. The all-night celebration turned unpleasant when an unidentified gunman opened fire and killed two Black people and wounded one other person.

22-year-old Tiarah Poyau and 17-year-old Tyreke Borel were shot dead. Poyau whom prior to her untimely death aspired to be an accountant was a student at the St. Johnson’s University. She was shot just above her right eye while she was in the company of her two friends at the J’Ouvert. Borel was also shot in the chest during the event.

https://twitter.com/KI7AN/status/772900129393274880

Those who usually post on the Thee Rant page are often known to be current or retired police officers of the NYPD.

One user by name “Nuthinbudatruth” wrote, “It's 0644 on Mon. morning and already we have 4 SHOT with 2 DEAD (shot in the face) and we have 1 reported STABBING.” He also wrote, “Godless de Blasion (sic) was on his hands and knees PRAYING FOR THE STORM TO WASH OUT THIS PARADE. You reap what you sow.” This was greeted by some comments by some users of the website.

https://twitter.com/realrjones/status/772822881600475136

Another poster by name “TrueBlue” continued with mockery of the unfortunate incident and wrote, “Maybe the cops will ‘take a knee’ in protest.” This particular poster seemed to be jabbing Collin Kaepernick’s protest against the death of unarmed Blacks who are kept in police custody.

“Good thing they made them get a permit this year that sure fixed a lot of problems. “And if they don't behave, they'll get a stern talking-to and maybe not get a permit next year!” a poster by name “WashInTheBag,” wrote on the Thee Rant website in an attempt to torch on the policy issues at the parade.

An opinion from “Cosmos Kramer” made it obvious that the New York police officials were attempting to cover up the violence that erupted at the J’Ouvert parade for political reasons.

A post from the website stated that “There’s probably a memo from some chief ordering Brooklyn precinct commanding officers to browbeat any investigation which shows a link between crimes and the parade.”

Prior to the event, there was a post on the Thee Rant website on Thursday which predicted the horrendous occurrence but it was pulled down from the site after the prediction came to pass.

The police in America seems to act based on their racial affiliation than according to the law. The very people paid to protect all citizens have unfortunately turned into mechanisms used to suppress Black people. No wonder they usually feel threatened when they even see a harmless Black person. Their conscience puts them in a position of guilt. This is the reason for violent shootings even on big fests like J’ouvert. They are just reluctant to defend the Black community. And the reason is the law that speaks louder to them than the constitution, “Racism.” We don’t need such policemen.

In a showdown between All-Star basketball teams that took place at Gersh Park, in East New York, the Sean Bell All-Stars pay tribute to Sean Bell.

It was November 26, in the year 2006, and the place was Jamaica, Queens, New York city. Sean Bell and his friends were having a bachelor’s party at Club Kalua, a strip club that was being investigated by police at the times. Unfortunately, a confrontation broke out between Sean Bell, two of his friends and the police. The gruesome encounter left him dead, and two his friends injured. The police shot at him and his friends 50 times.

https://twitter.com/nj_blacknews/status/772170457688580096

Even though the incident happened almost a decade ago, players of the Sean Bell All-Stars believe that it is crucial he is remembered, especially now that cases of police brutality are becoming the order of the day. This was their way to remind us that the issues we are facing today are not new. Police brutality and racism have been around for a while. Their message to us was not to forget how long we’ve been fighting to attain absolute justice and not give up in the face of oppression and brutality.

This comes just weeks after Colin Kaepernick protested during a football game by sitting down on two different occasions when the national anthem was being played. An athlete protesting social injustice is now exactly a foreign concept, but modern athletes living their luxurious lifestyles have seemed indifferent to social issues for so long; now it is refreshing to see them taking a stand.

More and more athletes have been openly condemning police brutality and racism against Black people, using their star power to draw attentions to the problem, calling on the country to address the problem. We call on all-stars to take a stand against police brutality and discrimination against Black people.

A U.S District Judge has ordered for an upgrade of a lawsuit leveled against Charter Communications by Entertainment Studios Networks Inc. on a racially discriminatory basis.

A California federal judge has permitted Entertainment Studios Networks Inc. (ESN), a Black-owned media company to include additional instances of alleged racial misconduct to its suit against Charter Communications.

The lawsuit against Charter was initiated by ESN and the National Association of African-American Owned Media. The duo accused the C.E.O of Charter Communications Inc., Tom Rutledge for denying them opportunity for their programs to be aired on the cable network because of their racial affiliation.

But according to the judge, the case lacked enough evidence to ascertain the claims. Hence, ESN has been given some time to upgrade the lawsuit. Charter Communications seeks to have the case turned down but the court has declined that request. Charter is to respond to the upgraded lawsuit come 23rd September.

Moreover, in ESN’s newly upgraded lawsuit, two evidence of racism was stated. The added evidence circles around the top management of Charter; Rutledge and Allan Singer, the former Senior Vice President of Programming.

The claims further proving the blatant racism by some heads of Charter pointed to an incidence where Allen Singer made racist statements at some protesting African-Americans. The claim stated; “Singer yelled at these African-Americans and told them to get off welfare and that they were typical African-Americans looking for a handout.”

On the other hand, Charter claims they refused to enter into an agreement with ESN on a legal and genuine basis.

Further exposing the racist nature of Charter Communications, a customer, April Taylor shared a horrible sight he witnessed in August on T.V. He said racist messages rolled across his T.V. screen. Actually, this was the experience of several other customers of Charters in North Texas. The racist message read; “F— Black lives matter! 1488 Brought to you by Phreak of Nature Baby J and King Benji! All N—— Must Die!”

It isn’t a surprise the Black-owned media company is being prevented by all possible means. They definitely do not want the truth to be told. It is clear that the existence of Black people is actually a threat to them. But in no way will we be kept under oppression anymore. Our voices must be heard and we will tell our own story the way it is.

We wish Entertainment Studios Networks Inc. the very best in this legal battle. We stand in solidarity with them through these challenging times. We deserve justice!
