The football star donated backpacks worth $60,000 to students in New York at the beginning of the academic year.
Colin Kaepernick has been in the media limelight in recent weeks, following his decision not to stand for the national anthem. He has since stood his ground and given ample reasons for his actions.
Here he is, doing something great and thoughtful for the society, as he uses his public stage to help kids at school. The San Francisco 49ners quarterback gave out $60,000 in backpacks to students in Harlem and Bronx for the forthcoming school year.
Kaepernick’s girlfriend, Nessa Diab led the presentation of the gifts to the students and she also stated why it was important to make such a contribution to the community.
“Having a new backpack to start off the new school year helps give each student a fresh start,” Diab said. “When we looked at everything when it comes to supplies, we found backpacks were an investment for most parents.”
She went on to suggest how the students could use the durable Nike- sponsored backpacks as multipurpose bags, not only for school but could be used for family trips and other after-school activities. “We wanted to ensure we found one that could last for more than a year and that was sturdy, durable and versatile for students to use for books, sports equipment or art materials, and traveling,” she said.
The donations were done in the absence of Kaepernick, as he was away working hard at a training camp with his football team for the beginning of the NFL season. However, he sent a video message of support to the students.
“We must invest in our youth because they are the future leaders of our community,” he said. “I want them to know that we appreciate and care for them. In doing so, we must provide all the necessary tools for them to succeed and I will do whatever I can to ensure we do that as a community.”
Thanks to people such as Colin Kaepernick, our voices could be heard all around the country. We encourage other Black people who have reached success in their lives to donate and give back to the Black community. We must stick together and do as much as we can to ensure our children live in prosperity. They are our future and we all must contribute to providing equal economic and social opportunities for them.
