“[Castile] worked at a school, didn’t have his education license, but he definitely affected children, so we’d like [the scholarship recipient] to work on what he was: helping students,”2003 alum of St. Paul Central High School stated.
After about a month after the live-streamed death of another Black man at the hands of a police officer generated grief and a series of demonstrations across the country, some past students of St. Paul Central High School have decided to have a scholarship fund in memory of Philando Castile.
The scholarship fund is targeted at underprivileged students who wish to have a career in child development or education. The fundraising event will take place in St. Paul, Minnesota on Sunday by the St. Paul Central High School Foundation. The event is expected to host about 1000 people.
The scholarship fund is a collaboration between family and friends of Castile. “[Castile] worked at a school, didn’t have his education license, but he definitely affected children, so we’d like [the scholarship recipient] to work on what he was: helping students,” Adrian Perryman, 2003 St. Paul Central High School alumni explained the reason for their initiative.
Currently, it is unclear whether the scholarship will be awarded annually or semi-annually.
The death of Philando Castile though as painful as any other Black person who had died in a similar way, we will forever remember and love him for the good person that he was. It is a marvelous initiative by the family and friends of Castile to honor the memory of their beloved brother in such a useful and motivating way. This is a clear sign that Black people are united and we support each other. Therefore, we have to stand up against anything that will threaten or existence.
Moreover, the most disturbing thing about the crimes committed by police on Black people is the emotional and mental trauma it leaves the people with. Black people now live in fear in their own country; not knowing who will be shot dead next by a cop.
