#OscarsSoWhite Is 'A Symptom Of Something Else'

Last month, Mexican-Kenyan actress and film director Lupita Amondi Nyong’o expressed her disappointment about lack of inclusion in this year’s Academy awards.

Two years ago, Lupita won an Oscar for her role in 12 Years a Slave (2013). She has also appeared in other epic films such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and the play, Eclipsed (2015) among others.

While commenting on #OscarsSoWhite in a recent interview with Today’s Savannah Guthrie, Lupita said that the Academy award is “A Symptom of Something Else”. She said that the Academy needs to address its diversity issues. She encourages priorities to be given to diversified stories.

According to her, “…it’s good for all of us when we hear a diverse number of stories and are able to experience more diversity. It’s more reflective of the world we live in.”

She also spoke on using the “little weight” she has “in Hollywood to push for stories” she feels reflects the world we live in.
