Tensions Are Rising: 3 Police Officers Shot Dead In Baton Rouge

Just after recent massacre of five Dallas officers, three officers are shot dead in Baton Rouge.

Three Baton Rouge police officers have been shot dead and three wounded Sunday morning, July 17, at around 9 a.m.

Police officers responded to a call of a “suspicious person walking down Airline Highway with an assault rifle“. Soon after they arrived at the scene, they and gunmen, wearing a mask and dressed in black, engaged in a firefight tournament that led to the death of three officers and one suspect.

The Baton Rouge Police Department Sgt. Don Coppola said that one suspect is dead and two other escaped.

Cpl. L.J. McKneely urged community members to notify the police if they come across these gunmen. “If they are wearing army fatigues; if they are wearing all black; if they are wearing a mask; if they are wearing anything that’s out there, please, give us a call,” he said.

Names of the police victims aged 41, 32 and 45, as well as the deceased suspect, are yet unknown. So is the motive of the shooting. According to The New York Times, police are investigating alleged plot against police officers.

Tensions between Baton Rouge police and community escalated after notorious Alton Sterling police shooting. Since then city became the scene of several protests and demonstrations.


The deceased suspect was identified as the 29-year-old Black man, Gavin Eugene Long of Kansas City, Missouri. It seems like he engaged in the shooting on his 29 birthday. According to WSJ, the shooter may have been connected with an anti-government group named the New Freedom Group.


Two of the deceased officers served in Baton Rouge Police, they were identified as Officers Montrell Jackson, 32, and Matthew Gerald, 41. The other slain officer was East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputy Brad Garafola, 45. One of the wounded officers is in a critical condition and got out of surgery. Alton Sterling family have condemned the shooting and offered condolences on the officers’ deaths.
